Multi-factor authentication is a process where a user is prompted during the sign-in process for an additional form of identification, such as to enter a code on their cellphone or to provide a fingerprint scan. Entra ID Multi-Factor Authentication works by requiring two or more of the following authentication methods:
Something you know - typically a password.
Something you have - such as a trusted device that is not easily duplicated, like a phone or hardware key.
Something you are - biometrics like a fingerprint or face scan.
Available Verification Methods
1. Microsoft Authenticator app: A secure, easy-to-use app for generating verification codes.
2. OATH Hardware token (preview): A physical token that generates time-based codes.
3. OATH Software token: Apps like Google Authenticator or Authy.
4. SMS: Receive a code via text message.
5. Voice call: Get a code through a voice call to your phone.
Trusted Devices
You can enable this option to trust the device you’re connecting to not always validate you for the next 14 days.
Trusted IPs
The Trusted IPs feature of Entra ID Multi-Factor Authentication bypasses multi-factor authentication prompts for users who sign in from a defined IP address range. You can set trusted IP ranges for your on-premises environments so there's no Entra ID Multi-Factor Authentication prompt when users are in one of those locations. The Trusted IPs feature of Entra ID Multi-Factor Authentication requires Entra ID Premium P1 edition. You can skip MFA from an entire subnet if you want to.
Why is MFA Important?
In today’s digital world, threats are everywhere. Passwords alone are no longer sufficient to protect against unauthorized access. By leveraging multiple forms of verification, MFA significantly reduces the risk of attacks and unauthorized access. Entra ID makes it easy to add this extra layer of security without making the process cumbersome for your users.
💡 Pro Tip: Implementing MFA doesn’t have to disrupt user experience. Features like Trusted Devices and Trusted IPs help balance security and convenience, allowing trusted users smoother access while maintaining robust security standards.
Let’s keep our digital spaces secure, and stay one step ahead of cyber threats with Entra ID Multi-Factor Authentication!
